Ghost of Tsushima:

Ever since Assassins Creed started leaping from ancient Egypt to reconnaissance Italy, we have been keen to find out how open-world stealth-action would take on feudal Japan. Consider that wish fulfilled with Ghost of Tsushima. Those awesome guys at Sucker Punch Productions took 13th century Japan and added in one of the best combat systems we have ever seen. Along with gorgeous landscapes and a sensational soundtrack as icing on the cake. If you ever thought what it’s like to be a samurai then this is the game for you.

The Setting

Ghost of Tsushima is a fictional tale with fictional characters. Based on the real invasion of Japan by the Mongol Empire in 1274. The invasion started on the island of Tsushima. In this game, you play as Jin Sakai, head of Sakai clan and a Samurai warrior. The main antagonist is Khotun Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, who is a ruthless and cunning general of the Mongol Empire.

Combat

Tsushima’s combat is like a perfect blend of Batman Arkham series, Assassins Creed Syndicate and Akira Kurosawa’s films. It has the usual bits like dodging, attacking, heavy attacks and blocking. But the feature that makes it so interesting is different Stances. As you progress through the story you unlock various stances. Each stance has unique moves and strengths against certain weapons. The starting Stone Stance is ideal for swordsmen. While a Water Stance uses slow but powerful strikes that can break defenses of any shield-wielding enemies.

While being extremely chaotic and fast-paced, combat in this game is really deep. Each enemy has clear audio tells, which makes it easy to block or dodge. Even weak defeated enemies crawl helplessly trying to escape. You can even bow to show respect, wipe the blood off your sword and the list goes on. And most importantly, you can pet foxes!

The Little Things

Although you may say what’s new in that. Well, what really makes me gleam are the little things. Such as the minimalist on-screen HUD and camera angles. Also, the soundtrack of this game is phenomenal. You can really feel the tension when you are sneaking past an enemy. Even when you get caught the music smoothly transitions from stealthy to swords clashing.

Environments

For me, this is the best part of this game. The island of Tsushima is gorgeous. It has one of the most beautiful virtual landscapes I have ever seen. Every scene is densely packed with flowers, leaves, trees and grass all blowing with the wind in every direction. Honestly while playing this game I can’t help but take screenshots at every other location I go. The forests seem beautiful and deadly at the same time. And there is a sense of eeriness. The environment also blends with gameplay. If you see a different colored tree or rock and you go there you are bound to find some mission or quest there. This feature makes a lot immersive, something which Legend of Zelda: Breaking Dawn did a while ago.

Ghost of Tsushima review:

Talking about me, I’m quite impressed with it. Yes, the game has a few flaws here and there with the stealth system but overall it is a masterpiece. Throughout the 40-50 hours it took for me to complete the game, it kept me engaged enough and not even a second of it felt boring. The progression system was also rewarding and challenging at the same time. if you want some action-adventure samurai slashin’ gameplay, this is the one for you.
